Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) and the crystallographic community of the Chicago area are pleased to announce that we will be hosting an ACA-sponsored Summer School in Crystallography from Monday 14 July through Saturday 26 July, 2008. The summer school will be conducted primarily on the campus of IIT, a small, well-respected technological university on the south side of Chicago, just across the expressway from US Cellular Field. We will take extensive advantage of the facilities of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory; the APS is the brightest source of X-rays in the US, and it offers superb facilities for crystallography and other applications of X-rays. Registration for the school is now open; see the Summer School home-page for instructions and links. Enrollment by non-local students will be limited to 30 students; we will also encourage local students to apply. We expect that the majority of the students will be graduate students with some experience either in crystallography or a closely related field of chemistry or biochemistry, but we will accept postdocs and technicians. The registration materials will be available on the ACA webpage once the final budget is assembled, so watch for further announcements.
Most of the first week of the school will be spent at IIT, with time divided between lectures and lab work, both in the computer lab and in the wetlab. The remaining week of the school will be held partly at IIT and partly at the APS, where we will have at least two days worth of beam time at several different sectors.
The costs for the are as follows. Limited scholarship funds are available; please e-mail the Director if you are interested in financial aid. These numbers are tentative; final prices will be announced in mid-May.
|Housing/night, Single Room||$58 / day|
|Housing/night, Double Room||$48 / day|
|Parking||$88 for 2 weeks|
|Registration||$400 for 12 days|
The faculty of the school is still being assembled, but the following crystallographers have participated in the past:
The Advanced Photon Source requires all experimenters to register in advance of their visit to the APS. This requirement applies to students in the Summer School. Please examine the APS webpage to see what your responsibilities will be as an experimenter there. Details on how to register are available. specific suggestions shortly regarding registration.
Also, recognize that the APS has a specific dress code for all researchers working on the Experimental Floor. Plan to wear slacks (not shorts or skirts) and close-toed shoes on the days that you are at the APS.
We welcome further inquiries from prospective students and faculty, and from companies that might wish to help sponsor the school. Please e-mail Andy Howard at email@example.com for further information.
